About

Whychus Crossing Campground is a remote dispersed camping area managed by the Ochoco National Forest in the Crooked River National Grassland. Located along Whychus Creek, this primitive site offers a unique high desert camping experience with scattered shade trees and the sounds of flowing water. The campground features a handful of informal campsites with picnic tables distributed on both sides of the creek. Access to the full camping area requires fording Whychus Creek via the road, which is only passable at low water flows and requires a high clearance vehicle. During higher water periods, only campsites on the near side of the ford may be accessible. The remote location provides solitude and a true backcountry experience, though campers must be completely self-sufficient. This is a no-fee dispersed camping area with no amenities. There is no potable water, restrooms, or trash service. Campers must bring all necessary supplies including water, and must pack out all trash. The area is accessible via Camp Polk Road from Sisters, transitioning through Wilt Road and Whychus Flat Road before reaching Whychus Creek Road.

Directions

From Sisters, Oregon: Take Camp Polk Road for 2.6 miles, continue straight onto Wilt Road for 6.5 miles, then turn left. Take a slight right onto Whychus Flat Road, then continue straight on Whychus Creek Road. The road crosses Whychus Creek via a ford that is only crossable at low flows with high clearance vehicles. Campsites are located on both sides of the creek.
