About

South Shore Group Sites is the only designated group campground at Haystack Reservoir, located in the scenic high desert of Crooked River National Grassland near Madras, Oregon. The facility features three primitive group sites (Willow, Cottonwood, and a third site) that are positioned out of sight from each other for privacy. Each group site can accommodate up to 50 people with space for 25 RVs or tents, making it ideal for large gatherings such as family reunions or climbing groups. The campground provides multiple picnic tables, campfire rings, and vault toilets at each site, with ample parking for vehicles and trailers. The high desert setting features juniper trees and sagebrush at 3,000 feet elevation, offering expansive views of Mt. Jefferson and excellent stargazing opportunities under wide open skies. Eagles and other birds frequent the reservoir shoreline. Haystack Reservoir offers fishing for kokanee, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, black crappie, and brown bullhead catfish. The lake also allows motorized boating and swimming, with boat launches located at nearby Haystack and West Shore day-use areas. The surrounding national grassland provides opportunities for hunting, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and off-highway vehicle riding. Smith Rock State Park, renowned for its world-class rock climbing routes, is a short drive from the campground. The facility is managed by Crook County Parks and Recreation District.
