About

South Shore Group Campground is the only designated group campground at Haystack Reservoir in Central Oregon near Madras. The campground features three primitive group sites, each accommodating up to 50 people with space for 25 RVs or tents, making it ideal for family reunions and large group gatherings. Each site is private from the others and includes picnic tables and fire rings. All campfires must be contained within the fire rings. The campground is managed by Crook County Parks and Recreation District and no longer accepts reservations through Recreation.gov. All roads and campsites are gravel, with a locked gate at the entrance requiring check-in with the campground host at West Shore Campground 0.5 miles up the road. Two vault toilets serve the campground, and potable water is available at West Shore Campground. Located on Haystack Reservoir in the high desert at 3,000 feet elevation, the campground offers beautiful views of the reservoir and Cascade Mountains including Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood. The setting features native vegetation including juniper trees, sagebrush, and bitterbrush. The reservoir is popular for fishing and small motorized boating, with boat ramps located at West and East Shore Campgrounds. The low forest canopy and elevation provide excellent stargazing opportunities. Wildlife viewing includes waterfowl, deer, eagles, osprey, and Great Blue Herons.
