About

Riverside Campground sits along the upper Metolius River in Deschutes National Forest, part of a string of campgrounds offering some of the most stunning scenery in central Oregon. This tent-only walk-in facility features 16 sites, each with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Campers park and carry their gear a short distance to their site. Vault toilets are available throughout the campground. The spring-fed Metolius River provides an exceptional setting for fly-fishing, with clear, cold water supporting rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. Hikers and backpackers will find diverse terrain ranging from riverside trails to subalpine forest routes. Nearby attractions include the Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform, Metolius Fish Hatchery, Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery, and the Metolius-Windigo Trail. The area showcases volcanic geology, with the river originating at Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone. Wildlife includes mule deer, coyote, cougar, migratory birds, and native fish. Lava Lands Visitor Center and Lava River Cave in Newberry National Volcanic Monument are also within reach.
