About

Smith Rock State Park's bivouac campground provides tent-only camping in Oregon's iconic high desert climbing mecca. Located along the Crooked River canyon near Terrebonne, the park features towering tuff and basalt formations with over 1,500 bolted climbing routes attracting climbers worldwide. The campground serves as a convenient base camp for multi-day climbing trips, with walk-in tent sites situated about 150 feet from the parking area. The bivouac area includes modern amenities uncommon for walk-in camping: flush toilets, hot showers available exclusively to registered campers, potable water at communal sinks, and a 12-outlet charging station. A designated cooking area accommodates propane and gas stoves only, as campfires are prohibited year-round due to the dry climate. The campground also offers three ADA-accessible sites. Beyond climbing, visitors can explore miles of hiking and mountain biking trails with views of golden eagles, prairie falcons, mule deer, and river otters. Note that some climbing areas close January 10 through August 1 annually to protect nesting raptors.
