About
Green Ridge Lookout offers one of the most unique lodging experiences in Deschutes National Forest. This 20-foot tall fire lookout, built in the 1960s, sits perched on a ridge more than 2,000 feet above the scenic Metolius River. The R6 style cab is accessed via a short boardwalk from the parking area and a flight of stairs leading to the upper deck catwalk. The one-room cabin is furnished with a futon, table, two chairs, propane refrigerator, overhead light, propane wall heater, and a four-burner propane stove with oven. Guests are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of snow-capped Mt. Jefferson (Oregon's second-highest peak at 10,497 feet), dense forests of Douglas-fir, cedar, and Ponderosa pine, and the Metolius River basin below. The area provides excellent access to fly-fishing on the Metolius River, known for its clear, cold waters supporting rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout, and kokanee salmon. Nearby hiking opportunities include riverside trails and routes to the top of Black Butte. Lake Billy Chinook, approximately ten miles away, offers additional boating and fishing opportunities. During summer months, Forest Service volunteers staff the lookout for fire detection.
