Green Ridge Lookout

Open for reservations during the spring season (early May through June). Summer months are closed to rentals as the lookout is staffed by Forest Service volunteers. Fall rental season runs mid-September through mid-November. Early and late season access may require high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, and snow may delay openings.

Green Ridge Lookout is perched on a ridge more than 2,000 feet above the Metolius River in Deschutes National Forest. Built in the 1960s, this 20-foot tall fire lookout provides guests with unmatched views of Mt. Jefferson, Oregon's second-highest peak at 10,497 feet, along with panoramic vistas of the Metolius River basin and surrounding coniferous forests. The one-room cabin features a futon, table and chairs, propane refrigerator, overhead light, wall heater, and a four-burner propane stove and oven. Guests must bring all water for drinking, cooking, and washing, as well as their own cookware and utensils. A vault toilet is located nearby. The cabin accommodates a maximum of four people. The lookout is available for rental in early May through June and mid-September through mid-November. During summer months, it is staffed by Forest Service volunteers for fire detection and is not available. Access may require a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle during early and late season due to snow or road conditions.

Directions

From Sisters, travel 5.5 miles west on US Highway 20 to Forest Road 11 at Indian Ford Campground. Turn right on Forest Road 11 and travel approximately 10 miles to the end of pavement at the junction with Forest Road 1150. Take the left fork of Forest Road 1150 to the junction with Forest Road 1154. Turn left on Forest Road 1154 and continue to Forest Road 1140. Turn left on Forest Road 1140 and continue a short distance to spur road 600. Take a very sharp right on spur road 600 and travel approximately 0.5 miles to the parking area. Entry is by combination lock; call the Sisters Ranger District at (541) 549-7700 one week in advance for the gate combination.
