About
Whitefish Horse Camp is a specialized equestrian campground situated at the west end of Crescent Lake in the Deschutes National Forest. Nestled next to Whitefish Creek at 4,800 feet elevation, the campground sits adjacent to both Diamond Peak Wilderness and the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area, offering horse enthusiasts direct access to extensive trail systems. The campground features corrals designed specifically for overnight horse camping, with sites accommodating 2-4 horses depending on configuration. A trailhead located within the campground provides immediate access to the Whitefish Creek Trail, which climbs through lodgepole pine forests to Diamond View Lake with spectacular views of Diamond Peak, then descends along Trapper Creek through Engelmann spruce and white fir to Odell Lake. Portions of the renowned Pacific Crest Trail are also accessible from the campground, traversing Diamond Peak at timberline. Weed-free feed is required for all horses on the Deschutes National Forest to prevent the spread of invasive species. Crescent Lake itself is a glacially-carved basin offering brilliant blue-green waters and sandy beaches. The surrounding area provides habitat for mule deer, coyote, and various migratory birds. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the Cascade Lakes region and accessing wilderness areas throughout the 2.5-million-acre Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests.
