About
Welcome to the wild and remote canyons and rivers of eastern Utah. The Westwater Group Site is positioned next to the Westwater Ranger Station along the Colorado River, serving as the take-out for the Ruby-Horsethief section and put-in for Westwater Canyon.
This group campground accommodates up to 30 people and features a shade shelter with picnic tables, a fire ring, and a vault toilet. The site includes parking for up to 10 vehicles. Situated in a valley adjacent to the Colorado River, campers enjoy views of surrounding Navajo Sandstone walls. The location is ideal for river groups planning trips on the Ruby-Horsethief section, a 25-mile mostly flat-water stretch with Class I and II rapids, or Westwater Canyon, which features 11 named rapids ranging from Class I to IV surrounded by the Westwater Wilderness Study Area.
North of the site are numerous motorized and non-motorized trails, including Kokopelli's Trail, a premiere 140-mile mountain bike trail stretching from Loma, Colorado to Moab, Utah. The remote location places campers about 70 miles northeast of Moab, Arches National Park, and Canyonlands National Park, and approximately 35 miles west of Grand Junction, Colorado. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov at $50 per night.
Directions
From Grand Junction, Colorado, take I-70 west for approximately 35 miles to exit 227. Turn south at the stop sign and proceed for nine miles to the Ranger Station.
