About
West Fork of Rock Creek Cabin is a lovingly restored historic Forest Service guard station located on the western edge of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Once used as a guard station and later as a youth camp, this two-story log cabin now offers year-round accommodations for up to 6 guests. The cabin features modern conveniences including electrical lights and outlets, a baseboard heater, refrigerator, oven, and a wood stove downstairs for supplemental heat. A vault toilet is located north of the cabin, and potable water is available via a hand pump, though the water is heavily mineralized and guests may prefer to bring their own. The cabin sits in an open meadow surrounded by evergreens near the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, offering stunning mountain scenery and abundant wildlife. A resident herd of bighorn sheep frequents the area, and sightings of elk, moose, deer, mountain lions, and both grizzly and black bears are common. The West Fork of Rock Creek flows directly behind the cabin, providing excellent fishing opportunities, while the renowned Rock Creek blue-ribbon trout stream is nearby. Recreation abounds in all seasons. Summer visitors enjoy hiking, horseback riding, and fishing, while winter brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The cabin is approximately 45 minutes from Discovery Ski Area. Access is via a locked gate using a code provided upon booking. During winter, guests may need to walk 200 yards from the plowed highway to the cabin. Guests must pack out all trash and are asked to replenish the split wood supply before departing.
Directions
From Philipsburg, travel south on Highway 1 for just over 6 miles. Turn right onto Skalkaho Highway/Highway 38 and travel west for about 13-14 miles. The entrance to the cabin is on the left, behind a locked gate. The lock combination is provided in your confirmation email after booking.
