About

Stony Campground sits along Stony Creek near its confluence with Rock Creek, approximately 19 miles west of Philipsburg in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The campground features 11 sites spread across 2 acres of forest at an elevation of 5,500 feet. The area is known for its rugged mountain scenery and diverse wildlife, including bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer, mountain lions, and bears. Fishing is a major draw, with both Rock Creek (a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream) and Stony Creek offering brook, brown, and rainbow trout. Anglers must be aware that much of the stream is protected for bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout conservation. Rock Creek also provides rafting and boating opportunities at appropriate water levels, typically before July 1. The campground serves as a base for exploring hiking, mountain biking, ATV, and horseback riding trails that climb into the steep drainages and canyons of the Bitterroot Range. The Stony Lake Trail, located 3 miles up the road, is open to foot, horse, and bike travel. During winter months, the area transforms into a destination for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, though road conditions and snow levels affect accessibility.

Directions

From Philipsburg, travel west on Rock Creek Road/County Road 348 for approximately 14 miles, then turn right onto Rock Creek Road/County Road 102 and continue about 5 miles. The campground is located 19 miles west of Philipsburg off Rock Creek Road (Forest Road 102).
