About
Stony Creek Campground sits at the confluence of Rock Creek and Stony Creek in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, approximately 19 miles west of Philipsburg. The campground loops through a pleasant mix of conifers and cottonwoods that put on a colorful display in autumn. Each of the 10 sites includes a picnic table and fire ring, and bear-resistant storage lockers help protect food from wildlife. Rock Creek is one of Montana's premier Blue Ribbon trout streams, offering excellent fishing for brook, brown, and rainbow trout. Bull trout and westslope cutthroat are protected and must be released immediately if caught. The creek also provides opportunities for rafting and boating when water levels permit. The surrounding area offers extensive recreation including hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, and horseback riding on trails that climb into the steep drainages and canyons of the Bitterroot Range. Stony Lake Trailhead lies 3 miles beyond the campground. Wildlife in the area includes bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer, mountain lions, and bears.
Directions
From Philipsburg, travel west on Rock Creek Road (County Road 348) for approximately 14 miles, then turn right onto Rock Creek Road (County Road 102/Forest Road 102) and continue about 5 miles to the campground.
