About
Moose Lake Cabin is a historic one-room cabin built in 1917 for use as a Forest Service work station, nestled at the edge of an open meadow in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Located about 24 miles southwest of Philipsburg, Montana, the cabin sits on the Middle Fork of Rock Creek near the nearly 250-square-mile Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. The Middle Fork flows about 100 yards behind the cabin, providing easy access to excellent brook and cutthroat trout fishing. The cabin sleeps up to four people on two sets of bunk beds with mattress pads. Amenities include a wood-burning stove for heat, a two-burner Coleman stove for cooking, full kitchen utensils and cookware, a battery-powered LED lantern, and basic cleaning supplies. Drinking water is available from a hand pump, though it may freeze in extreme cold. A vault toilet is located nearby, and a fenced horse pasture is available for equestrians at no additional charge. Recreation opportunities abound year-round. Summer brings hiking and horseback riding on trails into the wilderness, hunting, and fishing. Winter visitors enjoy snowmobiling on groomed routes from nearby Copper Creek campground, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Georgetown Lake and Discovery Ski Area are a short drive away, and the town of Philipsburg offers restaurants, shops, a microbrewery, and the famous Sweet Palace candy store.
Directions
From Philipsburg, travel south on Highway 1 for about 7 miles to the junction with Skalkaho Highway/Highway 38. Turn right onto Highway 38 and continue west for about 9 miles, then turn left onto Moose Lake Road/Forest Road 5106. Travel another 9 miles to the cabin. In winter, the final quarter-mile may require walking, skiing, or snowmobiling.
