About

Moose Lake Cabin is a historic Forest Service work station built in 1917, located in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in southwestern Montana. The one-room cabin sits at the edge of an open meadow surrounded by evergreens, with the Middle Fork of Rock Creek flowing about 100 yards behind it. The cabin offers rustic accommodations with two sets of bunk beds sleeping up to four people, a wood stove for heat and cooking, a two-burner Coleman stove, and basic cooking equipment and utensils. The cabin provides hand-pumped drinking water year-round (though it may freeze in extreme cold), a nearby vault toilet, an outdoor fire pit, and picnic table. A fenced pasture is available for horses. The entrance is gated and locked with a combination code for privacy. Guests must bring their own bedding, food, propane canisters, and pack out all trash. Firewood is usually available but not guaranteed. The area offers exceptional brook and cutthroat trout fishing in the Middle Fork of Rock Creek, Copper Creek, and other nearby streams. Three wilderness trailheads are within six miles, providing access to the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. Winter visitors enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, though avalanche danger can increase with weather conditions. The cabin is located near Georgetown Lake, Discovery Ski Area, and the town of Philipsburg. Wildlife including elk, moose, deer, mountain lions, and both grizzly and black bears inhabit the area.

Directions

From Philipsburg, travel south on Highway 1 for about 7 miles to the junction with Skalkaho Highway/Highway 38. Turn right onto Highway 38 and continue west for about 9 miles and turn left onto Moose Lake Road/Forest Road 5106. Travel another 9 miles to the cabin. Winter weather conditions may require visitors to park on the main road and walk about 200 yards to the cabin.
