About
Bighorn Campground is situated in the scenic Rock Creek drainage of the Lolo National Forest, right along Rock Creek, which is renowned as a blue ribbon trout stream. The campground is surrounded by old growth ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest in a rugged canyon environment. Between 2023 and 2024, the site underwent significant upgrades including new vault toilets, new campsites, fire rings, picnic tables, and reconstructed access roads with improved drainage. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Fees are charged from May through September, while the rest of the year is free, though amenities are not available from October through April. The remote location offers solitude and excellent fishing opportunities, though access requires navigating a narrow and rough road that is not recommended for trailers, motorhomes, or tow vehicles.
Directions
On Interstate 90, 20 miles east of Missoula, take Rock Creek exit #126 onto Rock Creek Road. Drive 33 miles south on Rock Creek Road #102. Trailers, motorhomes and tow vehicles are not recommended due to the narrow and rough road.
