About

Crystal Creek Campground is a small, primitive camping area in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest along Skalkaho Highway (MT-38). The campground features 3 camping units situated near Mud Lake with access to fishing opportunities. Amenities are minimal, consisting of a vault toilet and nothing more. There is no potable water available, and campers must bring their own drinking water. No garbage services are provided, so visitors must pack out all trash. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system and no fees. The campground is accessed via Skalkaho Highway, a narrow, winding gravel road that traverses Skalkaho Pass at 7,258 feet elevation in the Sapphire Mountains. Due to the road conditions and tight turns, trailers longer than 16 feet are not recommended. The scenic highway and campground are only accessible seasonally, closing for winter in late November and reopening the Friday before Memorial Day, weather permitting.

Directions

From Philipsburg, go south on Highway 1 for approximately 6 miles. Turn southwest on Skalkaho Highway (Highway 38) and continue for approximately 25 miles. Follow the signs to the campground.
