About
War Ridge/Backus Mountain Campground provides a quieter alternative to the river-adjacent campgrounds in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Located on a ridgetop near Backus Mountain in Fayette County, West Virginia, this primitive campground offers 8 drive-in sites that accommodate tents, small RVs, and campers. Only vehicles under 25 feet in total length are recommended due to site and road conditions. As a primitive campground, War Ridge has minimal facilities. There is no potable water, electricity, or hookups available, so campers must bring their own water supply. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring with grill. Campers should use existing fire rings only and burn dead wood found on the ground. Bear-proof trash receptacles are provided. Camping is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Sites are limited to 8 people and 4 pets maximum, with pets required to be leashed at all times. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM, and checkout is at noon. Camping is limited to 14 days per 28-day period across all park campgrounds.
Directions
From Beckley, take Highway 41 to McCreery, cross the river, and continue towards Danese. Turn right onto Backus Mountain Road, drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn right at the gravel road (SR 22/7). The campground is on your right approximately 0.5 mile off Backus Road.
