About

Grandview Shelter 3 is a small picnic shelter located within the Grandview area of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, one of West Virginia's most scenic destinations. The shelter is shaded by the forest canopy and provides space for approximately 30 people inside with additional capacity for 42 outside, making it suitable for group gatherings and picnics. The Grandview area became part of New River Gorge National River in 1990 after serving for over 50 years as one of West Virginia's most popular day-use state parks. Perched 1,400 feet above the New River, the area features the dramatic Main Overlook where visitors can see an active railway and the town of Quinnimont, where the first coal was shipped out of the gorge in 1873. The location offers beautiful displays of rhododendron and spectacular gorge views. Visitors to the area can explore five hiking trails, enjoy ranger-led activities during the season, and utilize various recreational facilities including playgrounds, volleyball courts, baseball fields, and basketball courts. Theatre West Virginia performs summer outdoor dramas in the area. The seasonal visitor center operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The city of Beckley, located approximately 12 miles away, provides shopping, restaurants, hotels, and attractions including a children's museum and Exhibition Coal Mine.

Directions

From Beckley, follow I-64 East five miles to Exit 129B. From Lewisburg, follow I-64 West forty miles to Exit 129. From either exit, turn right and follow Route 9 North six miles to Grandview.
