The Playground Picnic Shelter is the primary shelter at Grandview, the most popular day-use area within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. With capacity for up to 200 people, this large covered facility is ideal for family reunions, group picnics, and large gatherings. The shelter includes a covered eating area, three charcoal grills, and six electrical outlets for convenience. Located just past the amphitheater and closest to the main playground and ball fields, the shelter sits within the historic Grandview area that served as one of West Virginia's most beloved state parks for over 50 years before joining the National Park System in 1990. The area features spectacular views of the New River from overlooks perched 1,400 feet above the gorge, where visitors can see active railway lines and the historic coal town of Quinnimont. The surrounding Grandview area offers five hiking trails, stunning displays of rhododendron, a seasonal visitor center, ranger-led activities, summer outdoor dramas by Theatre West Virginia, volleyball court, baseball field, and basketball court. The facility is located approximately 12 miles from Beckley, which offers additional amenities and attractions including restaurants, hotels, and the Exhibition Coal Mine.

Directions

From Beckley, follow I-64 East five miles to Exit 129B. From Lewisburg, follow I-64 West forty miles to Exit 129. From either exit, turn right and follow Route 9 North six miles to Grandview.
