About

Meadow Creek Campground is a primitive tent-only camping area situated along the scenic New River in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Located just one mile from the Sandstone Visitor Center, this no-fee campground offers 17 walk-in tent sites spread across an open field with views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. The campground is accessed via a low-grade railroad crossing that is dangerous for RVs and trailers, making it strictly tent-only with no vehicle camping permitted. The campground provides basic amenities including composting toilets that operate year-round and trash collection, but campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. Each designated campsite accommodates up to 2 tents, 8 people, 4 pets, and 2 vehicles (parked in designated areas, not at campsites). Fire rings are provided at each site, and campers may burn only dead wood found on the ground. The location along an active railroad line means visitors should expect some noise from passing trains and their horns. Operating on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required for individual sites, Meadow Creek is a good option for spontaneous trips to the New River Gorge. A group site for 8 or more people is available by permit through the park's permits office. The campground enforces a 14-day stay limit per 28-day period and maintains quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Pets must remain leashed at all times.
