Upper Onion Creek Campground sits 0.7 miles off State Route 128 in the red rock country near Moab, offering dramatic views of the Colorado River canyon, surrounding cliffs and mesas, and the La Sal Mountains. The campground features 14 individual sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, with each site limited to 10 people and two vehicles. Two group sites are available for reservation through Recreation.gov.
The location provides direct access to the Onion Creek four-wheel drive road, a popular route for off-road enthusiasts. Campers should be aware of seasonal rains and potential flash floods in the area. The gravel access road leads from Highway 128 toward Fisher Valley, approximately 21 miles east of the Highway 191 junction.
The campground is about 40 minutes from Moab, which offers full amenities including dining, shopping, equipment rentals, tour companies, and museums. It also provides convenient access to Arches National Park (40 minutes) and Canyonlands National Park (55 minutes). Nearby boat launches are available at Lower Onion Creek and Hittle Bottom Campgrounds.
Directions
From the junction of Highway 191 and State Route 128, drive east 21 miles along the Colorado River. Turn right onto a gravel road toward Fisher Valley (not Fisher Towers road) and drive 0.7 miles to the campground.
