About

Sunset Campground is one of two family campgrounds at Richard Bong State Recreation Area, located on the western side of the park near the observation tower and trail network. The campground provides both electric and non-electric campsites, with some sites specifically designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. Modern amenities include a shower building, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, and a playground area. The recreation area itself is named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Wisconsin native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. Once designated to become a jet fighter base, the land was preserved by local citizens and became Wisconsin's first state recreation area in 1974. The former runway area runs the entire length of the park and provides unique recreational opportunities. Sunset Campground offers convenient access to the park's extensive trail system, including mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding trails. The park features nearly 30 miles of trails across over 4,500 acres of managed prairie and natural areas. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, with great egrets, sandhill cranes, and great blue herons known to nest in the area.
