About

Sunset Campground sits within Richard Bong State Recreation Area, named after Major Richard I. Bong, Wisconsin's WWII air ace and America's leading fighter pilot of the war. The 4,515-acre property was originally designated as a jet fighter base but was abandoned before construction was completed, eventually becoming a state recreation area known for its prairies, wetlands, and diverse recreational opportunities. The campground provides a comfortable base for exploring the area's extensive trail system, nature center, and hunting grounds. Each standard site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Facilities include a shower building with flush toilets, vault toilets throughout, a dump station, and a playground for families. Both electric and non-electric sites are available, along with ADA-accessible options for campers with disabilities. The park operates year-round with gates open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. A Wisconsin vehicle admission sticker is required for entry. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash no longer than 8 feet and are not permitted in buildings, beaches, or playgrounds.
