About

Suloia Lake Cabin sits on the western shore of Suloia Lake on Chichagof Island, 30 miles northwest of Sitka in the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area. The current cabin was built and donated by the Carl Eurich family in memory of their son, replacing an older cabin on the east shore. This is an extremely remote wilderness destination accessible only by floatplane, with a 20-minute flight from Sitka. The 12x14-foot Pan Abode-style cabin accommodates up to six people on two double bunks and two single bunks. Amenities include a wood stove for heat, table with benches, cooking counter, cupboard, broom, and an axe or splitting maul. A small square-bowed skiff with oars is provided for exploring the 2-mile-long lake. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, cooking stove, utensils, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, and personal flotation devices. Suloia Lake offers wilderness solitude with opportunities for fishing and deer hunting. Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden inhabit the lake, though fishing can be slow. The Suloia Trail leads from Suloia Bay to the old cabin site on the eastern shore. The cabin is surrounded by dense cedar, spruce, and hemlock forest, with forested mountain ridges rising to 2,600 feet. Brown bear frequent the area.
