About
Kakul Narrows Shelter is a remote three-sided Adirondack-style structure managed by the USFS Sitka Ranger District in Tongass National Forest. Situated on Baranof Island along the east side of Kakul Narrows between Salisbury Sound and Fish Bay, the shelter sits approximately 25 miles north of Sitka in Southeast Alaska's island wilderness. The shelter provides minimal but functional overnight accommodations including a wood stove for heating, plywood bunks for sleeping, and a small table. This type of shelter is designed primarily for emergency use and overnight stays by boaters, kayakers, and hunters exploring the surrounding waters and coastline. There are no developed facilities at this site. Visitors must bring all potable water, pack out all trash, and be fully self-sufficient. Access is exclusively by boat or floatplane, with no trail connections. The area offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing, and exploring the protected waters of Kakul Narrows.
