About
North Beach Cabin sits just inside the forest fringe on the north beach of Shelikof Bay on Kruzof Island, 20 miles northwest of Sitka. The rustic 16x16-foot A-frame cabin features a sleeping loft accessed by a vertical ladder and can accommodate up to 8 people. Built in 1993 by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Sitka and local volunteers, the cabin is equipped with an oil stove for heating and offers spectacular views of the Gulf of Alaska's cresting waves. The cabin is surrounded by hemlock and spruce forest and sits just above a sandy beach on relatively flat, easy-to-explore terrain. Nearly 40 miles of old logging roads provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and off-highway vehicle riding. The area offers excellent beachcombing, photography, wildlife viewing, hunting, and fishing for Dolly Varden trout, coho, and pink salmon in local streams. Brown bears frequent the area. Access to this remote cabin requires a 45-minute boat ride from Sitka to Mud Bay on the east coast of Kruzof Island, followed by a 7.5-mile hike or ATV ride on old logging roads. The cabin can also be reached by helicopter at lower tides. Visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for wilderness conditions.
