About
Moser Island Cabin sits on the northern shore of Moser Island in upper Hoonah Sound, 48 miles north of Sitka, Alaska. This rustic 12' x 14' Pan Abode-style cabin was built in 1991 by volunteers from Sitka and serves as an excellent base for exploring this remote corner of the Tongass National Forest. The cabin accommodates up to 6 people with two double and two single plywood bunks, a wood stove for heat, cooking counter, table with benches, cupboard, broom, and an axe or splitting maul. Access is by floatplane (30 minutes from Sitka) or boat (2 hours). A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cooking stove, utensils, food, water, toilet paper, lantern, and garbage bags. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated before use. Beachcombing, seal watching, hunting, and fishing are popular activities. Shrimp fishing is available south and east of the island, and crabbing in nearby bays. At low tide, the shoreline leads to Chichagof Island where deer, brown bear, and waterfowl hunting is permitted. Local rivers offer Dolly Varden and pink and chum salmon fishing.
