About

Moser Island Cabin sits on the northern shore of Moser Island in upper Hoonah Sound, 48 miles north of Sitka, Alaska. Built in 1991 by volunteers from Sitka, this remote Pan abode style cabin is available year-round and provides an excellent base for experiencing Southeast Alaska's wilderness. The cabin can only be accessed by floatplane (30-minute flight) or boat (2-hour ride) from Sitka, weather permitting. The 12-by-14-foot wood cabin accommodates up to six people with two double and two single plywood bunks. It includes a wood stove for heat, table with benches, cooking counter, cupboard, broom, and an axe or splitting maul. An outhouse toilet is located close to the cabin. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated before use. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis for boat anchorage. Moser Island is covered by spruce and hemlock forest in upper Hoonah Sound. At low tide, the shoreline connects to Chichagof Island. The area is abundant with wildlife including deer, brown bear, and waterfowl. Popular activities include beachcombing, seal watching, shrimp fishing south and east of the island, crabbing in nearby bays, fishing local rivers for Dolly Varden and pink and chum salmon, and hunting deer, bear, and waterfowl on accessible Chichagof Island.
