About
Otstoia Shelter is a three-sided Adirondack survival shelter situated on the southwestern shore of Otstoia Island in Peril Straits, just west of the Duffield Peninsula on Baranof Island. Located approximately 41 miles north of Sitka within the Tongass National Forest, this remote shelter is accessible only by boat via saltwater. The shelter provides basic emergency accommodations with a wood stove for heat, plywood bunks for sleeping, and a small table. As a survival shelter, it offers protection from Southeast Alaska's harsh weather conditions for boaters and kayakers traveling through Peril Straits. The facility experiences light use due to its remote location. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all necessary supplies including food, water, and firewood. No potable water is available on-site. The shelter is available year-round and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system.
