About

Otstoia Shelter is a rustic three-sided Adirondack-style survival shelter located on the small island of Otstoia in Peril Straits, just west of the Duffield Peninsula on Baranof Island in the Tongass National Forest. Situated approximately 41 miles north of Sitka, the shelter is accessible only by boat or floatplane. The shelter provides basic overnight accommodations including plywood bunks for sleeping, a wood stove for heat, and a small table. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient as there is no potable water and no restroom facilities on site. Firewood is not provided. The area supports both motorized and non-motorized boating activities. Like other Tongass National Forest survival shelters, Otstoia is available for recreational use on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required and no fee to use.
