About
Brents Beach Cabin is a remote USFS rental cabin located on the eastern shore of Kruzof Island in Crab Bay, within Alaska's Tongass National Forest. The rustic 12' x 14' Pan Abode style cabin sits just inside the timberline on a scenic sandy beach, surrounded by dense spruce and hemlock forest. Brown bears frequent the area, and volcanic features are accessible via a 10-minute hike north of the cabin. The cabin sleeps up to six people on four plywood bunks (two double, two single) with no mattresses provided. Interior amenities include a wood stove for heating, a cooking counter with table and benches, and basic tools including an axe and broom. A pit toilet is located outside. There is no potable water on-site; water from a nearby inlet stream must be treated before use. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, pads, cooking stove, cookware, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, fire starter, and raingear. The cabin is accessible only by boat or helicopter, weather permitting. Boat access from Sitka takes approximately 35 minutes but depends on tide conditions. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come basis. Erratic and abnormally large waves have been reported at low slack tide, so approach the beach carefully. Non-boaters should consider using a local charter operator.
Directions
Located on the east side of Kruzof Island in Crab Bay, 15 miles or 35 boat minutes northwest of Sitka. Access by boat or helicopter only, weather permitting. Boat access depends on tide conditions. Helicopter landing possible at lower tides. Refer to USGS topographic maps Sitka A-5 and A-6.
