About
Brents Beach Cabin sits just inside timberline on a beautiful sandy beach facing Crab Bay on the eastern shore of Kruzof Island, 15 miles northwest of Sitka in Tongass National Forest. The original A-frame cabin was donated by a former Forest Service district ranger in memory of his teenage son, Brent, who drowned in Sitka Sound while halibut fishing in the early 1970s. The current Pan-abode cabin replaced the A-frame in 1985. The one-room cabin sleeps six on two double plywood bunks and two single plywood bunks. It includes a wood stove, table and benches, cooking counter, broom, and an outhouse toilet. A mooring buoy is provided for boat anchorage on a first-come, first-served basis. The cabin is surrounded by dense spruce and hemlock forest, with brown bears frequently in the area. Visitors enjoy beachcombing, sunbathing, saltwater fishing in the bay, and deer hunting in-season. Volcanic features are a 10-minute hike north of the cabin. This is an extremely remote location accessible only by boat or helicopter, weather permitting. Boat access can only occur at certain stages of the tide, and erratic waves have been reported at low slack tide. Water is available from a nearby inlet stream but must be treated. Visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for extended stays due to weather conditions.
Directions
Located 15 miles west of Sitka on the southeast shore of Kruzof Island. Access is 30 minutes by boat from Sitka, weather permitting. Helicopter landing on the beach is possible at lower tides. Boat access can only occur at certain stages of the tide. Erratic and abnormally large waves have been reported on Kruzof Island at low slack tide; avoid approaching the beach by boat while the tide is turning. Non-boaters or out-of-town visitors are encouraged to use a local charter boat operator. Refer to USGS topographic maps Sitka A-5, A-6.
