About
Mud Bay Shelter is a primitive 3.5-sided shelter located at Mud Bay on the east side of Kruzof Island in the Tongass National Forest. The shelter provides basic overnight accommodation for backcountry travelers with a wood stove for heating and plywood bunks. Access is exclusively by boat, approximately 15 miles northwest of Sitka. The shelter serves as a staging point for exploring Kruzof Island's trails and accessing other remote recreation areas. Visitors should come fully prepared with their own drinking water, food, and supplies, as no potable water or restroom facilities are available. A mooring buoy at Mud Bay provides anchorage for boats on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a low-use, primitive facility suitable for experienced backcountry travelers comfortable with self-reliant wilderness camping. The remote island setting offers opportunities for day hikes, backpacking, wildlife viewing, and non-motorized boating.
