About
Shelikof Cabin overlooks a sandy beach on Shelikof Bay along the west coast of Kruzof Island in the Tongass National Forest, 20 miles northwest of Sitka. This remote 16x16-foot A-frame cabin with a dining tip-out and sleeping loft sleeps up to 8 people and provides basic amenities including plywood bunks, a table and benches, and a wood stove for heat. The cabin sits at the edge of spruce-hemlock forest on relatively flat terrain that's easy to explore. The expansive sandy beach offers excellent beachcombing opportunities and scenic ocean views of Shelikof Bay's rolling surf. Fishing is fair for Dolly Varden, coho, and pink salmon in a nearby stream. Brown bear frequent the area, so proper food storage and awareness are essential. Access is challenging and weather-dependent. Helicopter or wheeled plane can land on the beach during low tides. Alternatively, visitors can take a 45-minute boat ride from Sitka to Mud Bay, then hike 7 miles on Kruzof Island Road to Iris Meadows and the Shelikof Trail. ATV access is permitted as far as Iris Meadows, about 1.4 miles from the cabin. Trail users should exercise caution at slough crossings where trail markers can be difficult to spot. Crossing the meadows is easier during lower tides of 6 feet or less.
