Overview

Tongass National Forest is America's largest national forest, spanning nearly 17 million acres across Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage. The forest is currently open for recreation with no major forest-wide alerts or closures as of December 2025. However, there are several localized closures in effect: Cube Cove/Ward Creek area (blasting operations), Ross Adams Mine area on Prince of Wales Island, portions of Mendenhall Recreation Area (glacial lake outburst flood emergency), and specific areas around Hidden Falls Hatchery and Little Port Walter Research Station. The forest is currently undergoing a Land Management Plan Revision process that began in 2024. Roadless Rule protections were restored in January 2023 under the Biden administration, protecting much of the forest from road construction and logging. The forest offers 140+ remote cabins available for reservation through recreation.gov (typically $50-75/night depending on season), 13 developed campgrounds, and extensive dispersed camping opportunities. Key recreation features include bear viewing facilities at Fish Creek, Anan Creek, and Pack Creek, plus access to glaciers, fishing streams, and the world's largest intact temperate rainforest ecosystem. Fire danger is currently low across all zones (South, Central, North). Winter/spring seasonal considerations apply to some facilities.
