About
Piper Island Cabin sits just inside the forest fringe of Piper Island, overlooking a sandy beach within Schulze Cove on the north side of Fish Bay. The modified A-frame cabin accommodates up to 7 people with an open sleeping loft reached by vertical ladder, one double plywood bunk and one single plywood bunk on the main level. Heat is provided by an oil stove, though visitors must bring their own #1 diesel fuel. The cabin is located in a remote wilderness area frequented by brown bears. Recreational opportunities include beachcombing along the sandy beach, wildlife viewing, saltwater fishing for salmon and halibut, crabbing, and seasonal deer hunting. A mooring buoy is available for boat anchorage on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient and bring all supplies including fuel, sleeping bags, cooking stove, cookware, water, toilet paper, and garbage bags. The nearest water source is a stream on Baranof Island about half a mile away by boat. No boat is provided at this cabin.
Directions
Located on Piper Island in Fish Bay, 30 miles north of Sitka on the northwest coast of Baranof Island. Accessible by floatplane (20 minutes from Sitka) or boat (90 minutes from Sitka). Consult local tide tables before departing. Refer to USGS topographic map Sitka B-5 for geographic features.
