About

Piper Island Cabin is a remote 16' x 16' modified A-frame cabin located on a small island within Fish Bay on the northwest coast of Baranof Island, 30 miles north of Sitka, Alaska. Built in 1994 by volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station and local Sitka volunteers, the cabin features a large skylight over the dining area and an open sleeping loft accessed by a vertical ladder. The cabin accommodates up to 7 people and includes an oil stove for heating. A mooring buoy is available for boat anchorage. The cabin sits just inside the forest fringe of Piper Island, overlooking a sandy beach within Schulze Cove on the north side of Fish Bay. This is a truly remote location accessible only by boat (1.5 hours from Sitka) or floatplane (20 minutes from Sitka). Visitors must be completely self-sufficient and bring all amenities, including clean #1 diesel fuel for the oil stove. Recreational opportunities include beachcombing along the sandy beach, wildlife viewing, saltwater fishing, crabbing, and seasonal deer hunting. Brown bears frequent the area, so proper food storage and bear safety practices are essential. The cabin is available year-round, weather permitting, and requires reservations through Recreation.gov.
