Stone Cliff campground offers a unique primitive camping experience along the New River near the historic railroad town of Thurmond. This tent-only facility features 7 walk-in campsites, with 5 situated directly on a sandy beach along the New River and 2 nestled in the adjacent forest. The campground strictly prohibits RV, camper, and car camping, making it an ideal destination for backpackers and tent campers seeking a more rustic experience. The campground provides basic amenities including composting toilets and trash collection, but campers must bring their own water as no potable water is available on-site. Each site accommodates up to 2 tents, 2 vehicles, 8 people, and 4 pets. The location offers excellent access to the New River for swimming, fishing, and boating, while the Stone Cliff Trail provides hiking opportunities directly from the campground. Reaching Stone Cliff requires navigating a gravel road past a boat launch, adding to the remote feel of this riverside retreat. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted and no camping fees charged. With a 14-day limit per 28-day period and quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Stone Cliff provides a peaceful escape along one of the most scenic rivers in Appalachia.

Directions

From U.S. Route 19 north of Beckley, take the Glen-Jean-Thurmond exit. Take an immediate left and go 0.5 miles to Glen Jean. Turn right and follow the signs for Thurmond (WV Route 25). Continue for 6 miles to a three-way intersection. Bear right and go 1.5 miles on this road. Take a right on the gravel road, just before the bridge crossing the New River. Continue past the boat launch to the parking area.
