South Sandusky Campground occupies a prime location on Sandusky Cove along the western shore of Rend Lake, a 20,633-acre reservoir in the heart of Southern Illinois. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this well-developed campground offers 127 sites spread across multiple loops including Dogwood, Redbud, Pine Tree, Pine Oak, and Sycamore. Eight walk-to tent sites provide a more primitive experience, while 119 sites feature electric hookups suitable for RVs and trailers. The campground provides substantial amenities including hot showers, flush toilets, and drinking water throughout. An RV dump station is available on site. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. Playgrounds are located in the Redbud, Pine Tree, and Sycamore loops. The adjacent South Sandusky Beach offers swimming access, and a boat ramp provides lake access for watercraft. Rend Lake and the surrounding area offer extensive recreation opportunities. The Rend Lake Bike Trail, accessible directly from the campground, features over 20 miles of paved pathways winding through woodlands with views of the lake and Big Muddy River. The area supports fishing, boating, hunting, and wildlife viewing with populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, fox, raccoon, and waterfowl. Nearby attractions include an archery complex, dog park, and additional swimming beaches.

Directions

From I-57 take exit 71 and turn west onto Route 14. After 3 miles turn right on Rend City Road, then continue for 6 miles to the campground entrance on the right.
