Elevated conditions for wildfires are expected this afternoon, mainly between 12 PM and 7 PM CDT. Relative humidity values will fall to 25 to 35% this afternoon, and winds will be breezy from the south, sustained at 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 25 to 30 mph forecast. Vegetation is dry due to ongoing moderate to severe drought conditions over much of the region. Outdoor burning and activities that involve open sparks or flames are discouraged. Please report all wildfires to local law enforcement as soon as possible.
About
North Sandusky Campground is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility located on the western shore of Rend Lake near Sandusky Cove in the heart of Southern Illinois. The campground features 95 reservable electric campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and firepit. Modern amenities include hot showers, flush toilets, drinking water throughout the campground, and a centralized dump station. Playgrounds are conveniently located at the campground entrance and within the White Oak loop. Rend Lake spans 20,633 acres of water and 19,523 acres of surrounding land, creating a diverse recreation destination. The campground provides direct access to the Rend Lake Bike Trail, a 20-mile paved pathway that winds through scenic woodlands with sweeping lake views. The adjacent North Sandusky Day Use Area features a boat ramp, two reservable picnic shelters, and a disc golf course. The lake is known for excellent crappie fishing, and wildlife viewing opportunities abound with white-tailed deer, turkeys, raccoons, and numerous waterfowl and shorebird species. Additional recreation features around Rend Lake include an archery complex with a 3D trail, a dog park with swimming access, and two public swimming beaches including the pet-friendly North Marcum Beach. The surrounding woodlands of hickory, oak, and maple provide excellent habitat for wildlife and a beautiful natural setting for camping. Whether seeking adventure or a peaceful retreat on the water, North Sandusky Campground offers a well-equipped base for exploring Southern Illinois.
Directions
From I-57 take exit 77 and turn west on Route 154. After 4.5 miles turn south onto Rend City Road. Continue through the four-way stop and follow signs to the campground.
