About
Dam West Area sits along the southwestern banks of Rend Lake, a 20,633-acre reservoir in the heart of Southern Illinois. This day-use facility provides an ideal setting for picnics, water recreation, and outdoor activities without overnight camping. The centerpiece is a large picnic shelter that can accommodate up to 100 guests, complete with tables, grills, and drinking water. The area includes a boat ramp with daily use fees, playground equipment, and walking-distance access to a marina and dock. The Rend Lake Project Office and Visitor Center is located directly across the street. Rend Lake offers diverse recreational opportunities including fishing for the area's known crappie population, boating, and wildlife viewing. The surrounding woodlands of hickory, oak, and maple provide habitat for white-tailed deer, turkeys, and waterfowl. Visitors can access the Rend Lake Bike Trail, featuring over 20 miles of paved pathways through scenic woodlands with views of the lake and Big Muddy River. Additional nearby attractions include an archery complex, dog park with swimming area, and two public beaches including the pet-friendly North Marcum Beach.
Directions
From I-57 take exit 71 and turn west onto Route 14. Continue for 3 miles, then turn north on Rend City Road. The entrance is on the right after about 4 miles, just past the main dam.
