About
Snake Lake Campground and Equestrian Camp is situated at approximately 3,900 feet elevation in the Meadow Valley area off Bucks Lake Road, about 8 miles from the town of Quincy. Visitors are greeted by a mixed pine and fir forest and the shallow, lily pad-filled Snake Lake. The campground features 17 total sites, with 8 designated equestrian sites equipped with corrals. There are no hookups available. Horses are allowed overnight in equestrian campsites only, and watering horses at the lake edge is prohibited for safety reasons; water may be bucketed for horses at the spillway. This campground serves as a hub for multiple recreational activities and hosts staging areas for mountain biking, equestrian use, and OHV camping. It is one of the only campgrounds in the area with direct access to forest roads and multi-use trails from the campground itself. Easy access to trails within the Snake Lake Basin makes it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Activities include fishing, hiking, horseback riding, OHV use, and non-motorized boating. Swimming is not recommended due to the shallow, lily pad-filled nature of the lake. The campground operates seasonally and is managed by the Mount Hough Ranger District. Standard regulations include a 14-day camping limit, maximum of 6 people per site, and 2 vehicles per site. Campers should use weed-seed-free feed or pellets for horses and remove or scatter manure from corrals and campsites. In winter, there are no snowplow services. The nearby town of Quincy offers additional amenities and hosts various summer activities including music festivals and the Plumas County Fair.
