Located about 35 miles north of Vernal, Utah, Skull Creek Campground offers a serene mountain escape in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Situated on a hillside at 7,400 feet elevation, the campground is nestled among ponderosa pines and aspens that provide partial shade, with vibrant wildflowers dotting the landscape in summer. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring Flaming Gorge Reservoir, known for world-class fishing for lake, brown, and rainbow trout. Water enthusiasts can enjoy boating, water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, swimming, and scuba diving. Nearby Red Canyon and Greens Lake offer additional recreation opportunities, including canoeing and fishing for rainbow and brook trout. The Red Canyon Rim Trail provides excellent hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife watching with spectacular views. Red Canyon Lodge, situated on Greens Lake, offers canoe and bike rentals, horseback riding, a restaurant, and a gift shop. The Red Canyon Visitor Center features interpretive displays and area information. Below Flaming Gorge Dam, the Green River offers spectacular rafting through unique geology, outlaw history sites, and Native American rock art. The Flaming Gorge Dam itself provides guided tours of the hydroelectric plant.
