About
Scaredman Recreation Site is an off-the-beaten-path BLM campground located along Canton Creek in Douglas County, Oregon. This minimally developed recreation site sits at 1,390 feet elevation in a remote, heavily wooded area with diverse tree species. The campground features 10 campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, plus a vault toilet facility and access to a riverside day-use area. The recreation site takes its name from early hunters who were intimidated by the large wolf population that once existed in the region. Today, the area is known for its peaceful setting and excellent swimming opportunities. Canton Creek and nearby Steamboat Creek offer several outstanding undeveloped swimming holes, though both creeks are closed to all angling. Just 3 miles downstream, the North Umpqua River provides world-class fly-fishing and whitewater rafting opportunities. The campground is accessible via Steamboat Creek Road and Canton Creek Road, approximately 40 miles east of Roseburg on Highway 138. The Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway is nearby, offering scenic drives, hiking, and waterfall viewing opportunities. Reservations are required and must be made at least 5 days in advance through Recreation.gov.
Directions
From Roseburg, travel east on Highway 138 for 40 miles. Turn left/north onto Steamboat Creek Road and after half a mile, turn left/north onto Canton Creek Road. Scaredman is three miles from the Steamboat Creek/Canton Creek junction.
