About

Sarah Helmick State Recreation Site holds the distinction of being Oregon's first state park, established in 1922 when Sarah Helmick and her son James donated the original 5.46 acres to the state. The park sits along the floodplain of the Luckiamute River, forested with Douglas fir, grand fir, maple, ash, Port Orford cedar, and cottonwood trees. This is a day-use only facility with no overnight camping. The park features two reservable group picnic areas (DAY3CA and DAY3CB), each capable of hosting up to 150 people. Amenities include electricity, water, 10 picnic tables, and flush toilets. The shaded grounds under big leaf maples make it well-suited for group gatherings and picnics. Note: A quarantine is in effect restricting ash, olive, and white fringe tree materials to prevent emerald ash borer spread. Visitors should not bring firewood from these species.
