About

The Sandy Lake Dam and Recreation Area is situated at the outlet of Big Sandy Lake in northern Minnesota, part of the historic Mississippi Headwaters Project dating back to 1895. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this clean, family-friendly campground offers 60 sites including pull-through sites, electric hookup sites, tent sites, a camper cabin, and group campsites spread across north and south entrances. The recreation area provides the only public campground and beach access on Big Sandy Lake. Anglers enjoy excellent fishing opportunities in both the lake and nearby Mississippi River for northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. The site features multiple boat ramps for lake and river access, a swimming beach, playgrounds on both sides of the dam, and a fishing pier with dock space. The area is part of the historic canoe route that once connected the Mississippi River to Lake Superior, serving major fur trading companies. The old lock house has been converted into a free museum containing historical artifacts from this rich heritage. The surrounding landscape features mixed hardwoods and towering red and white pine forests, with abundant wildlife including bald eagles, white-tail deer, black bears, loons, and river otters. Educational programs are offered seasonally.
