About

Sandy Lake Dam and Recreation Area is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers at the outlet of Big Sandy Lake in northern Minnesota. The dam, dating to 1895, is part of the Mississippi Headwaters Project, one of the first reservoir systems in the country. The campground is divided by the dam into north and south sections with separate vehicle access, offering the only public campground and beach on Big Sandy Lake. The facility includes 43 single family sites and 5 double family sites, all with electric hookups, plus 2 group sites, 8 primitive walk-to tent sites (4 with electric), and a camper cabin with bunk beds. Amenities include flush and vault restrooms, shower facilities, drinking water, laundry facilities, and a dump station. Day-use facilities feature two lake boat ramps, one river boat ramp, docks, a fishing pier, a swimming beach, and playgrounds on both sides of the dam. Anglers target northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish in the lake and nearby Mississippi River. The old lock house has been converted into a free museum with historical artifacts. A forest of mixed hardwoods and towering red and white pine surrounds the area, with wildlife including bald eagles, loons, white-tail deer, black bears, and river otters.
