About

Set within a unique reclaimed mining landscape, Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area features three year-round yurts positioned along the west side of Yawkey Mine Lake. Each 20-foot diameter yurt sleeps up to seven people and includes two sets of twin bunk beds plus a twin-over-full futon bunk, a table with chairs and benches, and a wood-burning stove for heat. The insulated canvas structures have windows, a skylight in the domed roof, and wood floors. The yurts do not have electricity, water, or sewer hookups. Each yurt has an outdoor picnic table, fire ring with grill, and secure food storage locker. Year-round primitive toilets are located nearby. Winter firewood for heating is provided, while firewood for cooking can be purchased. The location offers ride-in, ride-out access, making it ideal for mountain bikers exploring the area's 25 miles of trail system. The recreation area is built on former mining pits and rock deposit stockpiles abandoned over 30 years ago, now transformed into clear lakes surrounded by red rock landscapes and regenerated vegetation. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR system.
