About

Schoolcraft State Park is a secluded north woods retreat located along the Mississippi River near Deer River in Cass County. Named after explorer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who camped near this location during his 1832 expedition to find the source of the Mississippi River, the park preserves 225 acres of virgin pine forest that remains virtually unchanged since that time. The campground offers 28 primitive, non-electric campsites nestled among majestic pines, including white pines more than 300 years old and stands of red pine planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The quiet, peaceful setting provides an authentic north woods camping experience with access to the gentle waters of the Mississippi River for canoeing and fishing. Hiking trails wind through the virgin forest where songbirds provide the primary soundtrack. This is one of Minnesota's smaller and more secluded state parks, perfect for campers seeking solitude and a connection to the area's natural and exploratory history. The park offers a genuine escape into Minnesota's Northwoods with minimal development and maximum tranquility.
