Air Quality Alert issued July 14 at 12:07PM CDT by NWS Duluth MN

July 14th, 12:07 PM — July 17th, 11:00 AM

* WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Maroon or Hazardous category. * WHERE...Northeast Minnesota. * WHEN...Until 11 AM CDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Everyone is more likely to be affected. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Very heavy smoke is expected across the Arrowhead today, as large wildfires continue to spread. Hot temperatures, when combined with the air pollution, will exacerbate health impacts. A frontal boundary will then spread heavy smoke further south this evening into Wednesday morning, as it moves across northern and central Minnesota. The onset of smoke will be rapid. This boundary eventually passes through the Twin Cities and into southeastern Minnesota on Wednesday or Wednesday evening, bringing heavy smoke even further south. Additional rounds of heavy smoke are possible from Thursday through Friday morning across the alert area.

About

Located within Savanna Portage State Park, Minnesota's third largest state park at over 15,000 acres, the group campground sits on the shores of Savanna Lake in a secluded mixed pine and oak forest. The terraced camping areas accommodate groups of up to 30 people and are drive-in accessible for small trailers and campers. The campground features primitive amenities including vault toilets, a hand pump for water, fire rings with grills, and picnic tables at each site. A boat landing provides direct lake access restricted to electric trolling motors, while the private beach and dock offer swimming and fishing opportunities for northern pike, bass, and panfish. The park preserves the historic Savanna Portage, a grueling six-mile trail once used by Dakota, Ojibwe, and European traders to connect the Mississippi River watershed to Lake Superior. Today visitors can hike the Continental Divide Trail and explore the park's rolling hills, lakes, and bogs.
