Special Weather Statement issued May 16 at 3:48AM CDT by NWS Duluth MN
Dry conditions and gusty winds will lead to near-critical fire weather conditions Saturday. West winds in the morning will turn northwesterly behind a cold front. Sustained winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 20 to 25 mph are forecast. Minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 30 percent are also expected. Together, these conditions could lead to the rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning. For more information on burning restrictions for Minnesota, see www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html.
About
Located in Minnesota's third largest state park, Savanna Portage Campground sits on Lake Shumway amid 15,000 acres of boreal forest, lakes, and bogs. The 61 semi-modern campsites accommodate tents and RVs up to 55 feet, with 18 sites offering electric hookups. Facilities include vault and flush toilets, seasonal showers, a dump station, and potable water from hand pumps. Each site features a fire ring with grill and picnic table. The park preserves the historic Savanna Portage, a six-mile trail once used by Native Americans and fur traders to connect the West Savanna River to the East Savanna River, linking the Mississippi River and Lake Superior watersheds. Today visitors can hike portions of this route along with over 20 miles of other trails. Lake Shumway offers swimming, fishing, and boat access, with canoe, kayak, and motor rentals available May through October. Beyond the main campground, the park offers six backpack sites, one canoe-in site, a group camp on Savanna Lake, an accessible camper cabin, and the Garni Guest House. The remote northern Minnesota location provides excellent wildlife viewing and dark skies for stargazing.
