About

Sandy Island Beach State Park encompasses 229 acres along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, featuring a 1,500-foot natural sandy beach. The park is part of the Eastern Lake Ontario Dune and Wetland System, a 17-mile stretch of beaches, dunes, wetlands, and embayments that represents the only significant freshwater dune site in the northeastern United States. The dunes were formed by wind and wave motion of a giant inland sea that preceded Lake Ontario. The park offers excellent swimming with lifeguards on duty during the summer season, along with a bathhouse and concession stand. The area is popular for fishing on Lake Ontario and provides a car-top boat launch for kayakers and canoeists. Walkovers and viewing platforms have been built throughout the park to protect the fragile dune environment while providing access for hikers and birdwatchers. The park serves as an important migratory route for species including the piping plover and black tern. Note: This is a day-use park only and does not offer overnight camping facilities. The park has two pavilions available for rental that can accommodate groups of 50-60 people.
