About
Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site commemorates the site of two significant battles during the War of 1812, when Sackets Harbor served as the center of American naval and military activity for the upper St. Lawrence Valley and Lake Ontario. The Second Battle on May 29, 1813 was particularly significant when British-Canadian forces landed at Horse Island attempting to capture military supplies and destroy a warship under construction. Today the 70-acre site is interpreted through exhibits, outdoor signs, guided and self-guided tours, and the restored 1850s Navy Yard and Commandant's House. During summer months, living history demonstrations feature guides dressed in period military clothing of 1813 reenacting camp life. The site includes open fields, a landscaped tree grove, Horse Island where the 1813 battle began, and a National Recreation Trail. This is a day-use historic site only. One pavilion is available for rental accommodating up to 60 people at $60 per day. The site is open year-round until dark for self-guided exploration, with museum buildings, Navy Yard, and guided tours of the Commandant's House available Saturdays from 10am to 4:30pm through mid-October. No camping facilities are available at this location.
