Running Deer Campground occupies a scenic position on the eastern shore of Little Grass Valley Reservoir in Plumas National Forest. The campground features 40 sites with paved parking pads and roads, including six premium lakeside sites with direct water views. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and bear box. Campground amenities include flush toilets, potable water, trash service, and a seasonal campground host. The 1,615-acre reservoir offers excellent recreation opportunities including fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout, and kokanee salmon. Motorized and non-motorized boating, swimming, and water skiing are popular activities. The Lakeshore Trail loops 14.5 miles around the lake and connects to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, providing options for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Situated at 5,060 feet in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains, the campground is surrounded by dense stands of pine and fir trees. The area also serves as a popular snowmobiling destination during winter months. Nearby Fowler Lake, a natural lily pond at 5,446 feet, makes for a scenic 12-mile day trip.
Directions
From Oroville, California, travel east on Highway 162 to Olive Highway. Turn right and continue 5 miles to Forbestown Road. Turn right and go 16 miles to La Porte Road. Turn left and travel 27 miles to La Porte, then 2 miles to signs for the recreation area. Turn right and continue just over 2 miles to the campground.
