About
Rujada Day Use Picnic Area is set along the banks of Layng Creek in Umpqua National Forest, featuring a large open grassy field surrounded by Douglas fir trees. The area is designed for group activities and family gatherings, with ample space for sports and outdoor games. On-site amenities include picnic tables with fire pits or grills, a playground, and a horseshoe pit. The moderately challenging 1.8-mile Swordfern Trail begins at the historic Civilian Conservation Corps Campground Register booth located in the picnic area. The trail parallels the south side of Layng Creek, traveling through second growth Douglas fir and a lush swordfern understory, crossing a wooden footbridge before climbing to an abandoned logging road. Hikers can complete the full loop back to the picnic area or opt for a shorter route. The surrounding forest features wildflowers including pioneer violet and wild iris, and in autumn, visitors can enjoy brilliant fall colors along Layng Creek. Three spectacular waterfall trails are located within 10 miles: Spirit Falls (0.4 miles, more difficult, 60-foot waterfall), Moon Falls (0.5 miles, easy, 125-foot cascading waterfall with picnic tables), and Pinard Falls (0.6 miles, more difficult, 105-foot waterfall). The area is operated by a concessionaire under permit from Umpqua National Forest.
