About
Musick Guard Station is a historic two-story cabin constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 to provide fire protection to the Bohemia Mining District. Named after the nearby Musick Mine, a major gold producer in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the guard station served as an important Forest Service contact point and administrative center before later becoming summer barracks for trail and firefighting crews. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the facility sits atop a narrow forested ridge between Fairview Peak and Grouse Mountain, surrounded by rugged summits up to 6,000 feet and steep slopes of fir, spruce, and hemlock. The rustic cabin features a main floor with central room, kitchen, and bedroom, plus an upstairs bunkroom. It's furnished with two double platform beds and four bunk beds without mattresses, a wood cook stove and oven for heat, and basic furniture. Outside amenities include a picnic table, campfire ring, vault toilet, and tent camping area. The remote location offers access to the Bohemia Mountain Trail with dramatic Cascade views and wildflowers in late June through August, plus exploration of historic mining sites including Musick Mine and Bohemia City ruins.
