About
The Rogue River Dispersed Campsites are primitive camping areas within the 36,453-acre Wild Rogue Wilderness, designated by Congress in 1978. These sites surround the Wild and Scenic Rogue River and provide wilderness camping experiences in one of Oregon's most rugged landscapes. The area features steep terrain with near-vertical cliffs, razor-sharp ridges, and cascading mountain creeks.
The Wild Rogue Wilderness provides unique opportunities to experience the iconic Rogue River, nationally known for salmon and steelhead fishing and whitewater rafting. Approximately 15 miles of the 40-mile Rogue River National Recreation Trail provides year-round hiker-only access to the river corridor. Wildlife is abundant, including black bears, deer, river otters, osprey, and great blue herons. The hot, dry summers make the river corridor ideal habitat for rattlesnakes, ticks, poison oak, and yellow jackets.
These dispersed sites are primitive with no developed facilities or amenities. Campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. Group size is limited to 12 persons and 9 pack animals for overnight use. Float permits are required for boating the Wild section of the Rogue River. The wilderness prohibits motorized equipment, bicycles, and aircraft landings.
Directions
Access to dispersed campsites is primarily via the Rogue River National Recreation Trail or by river. Trailheads include Foster Bar (west access), Mule Creek, Graves Creek, and Illahe. The area is located within the Wild Rogue Wilderness in southwestern Oregon along the Rogue River canyon.
