About

Roaring River Campground is a small, rustic facility located across Highway 224 from the Wild and Scenic Clackamas River in the beautiful Cascade Range of Mount Hood National Forest. Situated at approximately 1,000 feet elevation, the campground is nestled in a heavily wooded area thick with moss and lush greenery, though the river itself is not visible from the campsites and can only sometimes be heard. The Clackamas River is renowned for its fishing opportunities, with anglers targeting winter steelhead, spring Chinook salmon, late summer Coho salmon, and various freshwater fish species. The river also provides miles of class III-IV whitewater as it bends through the scenic Cascade Range, making this area famous among whitewater rafting enthusiasts. A hiking trail follows the river both north and south from the campground, and the nearby West Cascades Scenic Byway offers excellent scenic driving along the river corridor. The area provides habitat for federally protected bald eagles and northern spotted owl, with occasional sightings of peregrine falcons. The campground features vault toilets and hand-pump drinking water. Sites are limited to vehicles 16 feet maximum length. The campground typically operates seasonally with single sites at $19 per night and an $8 fee for extra vehicles.
