About
Armstrong Campground is a small but beautiful first-come, first-served campground located right on the banks of the Clackamas Wild and Scenic River in Mt. Hood National Forest. At approximately 870 feet elevation, the campground features 11 spacious sites surrounded by ferns, shrubs, and old-growth forest that provide privacy between sites. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. The river flowing past the campsites helps mask road noise from nearby Highway 224. Fishing is exceptionally popular here, with anglers targeting winter steelhead, spring chinook, and late summer coho salmon. The Clackamas River offers 12.5 miles of class III-IV whitewater below Indian Henry Campground, and a boat ramp at nearby Fish Creek Campground provides convenient access for kayaks and canoes. A hiking trail follows the river and begins about a mile away at Fish Creek Campground. The forest provides habitat for bald eagles, northern spotted owls, and occasional peregrine falcons. Vehicles are limited to 16 feet maximum, and larger RVs may have difficulty navigating the roads. No potable water is available on site.
